What is epigenetics?

It’s the science that explains how we have one genetic code but about 200 different types of cells carrying out millions of functions—from the cells in our eyes that detect light to the cells in our guts that absorb nutrients.

Studying the epigenome—all of the epigenetic modifications to our genetic code—is a rapidly evolving field that has big implications for how we understand inheritance, reproductive health and nervous system development; COVID-19, and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other diseases.

This is epigenetics!

The Canadian Epigenetics, Environment and Health Research Consortium (CEEHRC)—a network of epigenetic scientists and researchers from across Canada—has launched a new knowledge sharing initiative: thisisepigenetics.ca.

We have assembled an expert team of Canadian epigenetics and epigenomics researchers and trainees who are passionate about supporting epigenetic researchers in Canada and engaging with educators, clinicians, industry, decision makers and people across the country.

Through this initiative, CEEHRC aims to develop and strengthen collaborations between Canadian scientists, facilitate access to state-of-the-science epigenomic research tools and datasets, to translate new discoveries in the field for the benefit of health and medicine, and to broaden public understanding of epigenetics by providing communication, outreach and training resources.

This is just the beginning.

Over the coming months, we will continue to add content to our website and engaging in outreach activities, including through:

  • regular background, news, and other digital content
  • clinical resources
  • classroom activities and lesson plans
  • multimedia
  • and more!

We couldn’t be more excited to begin this journey to raise awareness in Canada about the fascinating and rapidly evolving field of epigenetics.

We hope you’ll join us on this journey.
