POSITION OVERVIEW:

The postdoctoral fellow will work in a multidisciplinary team investigating epigenetic mechanisms and gene regulatory networks that are involved in brain development and disease (i.e., Rett syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). The projects involve multi-omics approaches with that of molecular and cellular neurobiology techniques. The project will be completed in Dr. Mojgan Rastegar’s lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics, University of Manitoba. The priority will be given to applicants who are within the first two years of completing their PhD. This position will initially be for 1 year, and based on performance, can be expended for additional years.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, or related field(s).
  • Strong background in neuroscience with expertise in in vivo and in vitro research techniques, immunohistochemistry, and brain anatomy.
  • Standard techniques to study DNA, RNA, and protein, and their analyses
  • Experience with multi-omics studies is a plus.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics is located on the Bannatyne Campus, the main medical and health sciences campus of the University of Manitoba. The department is home to biochemistry, molecular biological sciences, and medical genetics expertise, practiced in an intellectually enriching research and teaching environment in the Max Rady College of Medicine and Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The Rastegar lab explores epigenetic control of murine and human brain development, stem cell differentiation, and neurodevelopmental disorders including Rett Syndrome and FASD. Her research team focuses on the role of DNA methylation reader, MeCP2, in determining neuronal structure and function using different in vitro and in vivo model systems using multi-omics, candidate gene approaches, stem cells, cell and molecular biology studies, microscopic imaging, and neuroscience techniques.
